There is actually much debate about the origin of poker, however the earliest known game was held in 15th century Germany.  Even in its origination there were many different variations to the games.  Some played with all 52 cards, some played with only 20 randomly selected cards.  Regardless of its origin it became extremely popular among many different people in many different countries.  By the 1800’s the traditional 52 card game was popular across America.  Bars and casino’s began opening in the mid 1850’s that were dedicated to different variations of poker and other gambling games.  The world series of poker began in the 1970’s; along with it came many strategy books.  As technology continued to advance, so did the game of poker.  In 1998 the first online poker game was played with players from four different countries.

In traditional game play a dealer is chosen from the players, however in a casino there is always a house dealer.  Before the dealer begins dealing cards the remaining players must place an ante on the table to indicate their participation in the game.  An ante is usually a small amount of money, however poker chips are used most often to represent money.  The dealer then begins with the player on his left and continues to give the players one card at a time, until each player has five cards.  After the deal the first betting round begins.  During each round a player can choose to have 1-4 of his cards replaced by the dealer to get a better hand.  Once everyone at the table has completed their exchange players begin to bet on their hands.  To stay in the game each player must meet the bet of the first player, they can also up the bet so the next player has to put in more.  If the player does not make the bet he or she is omitted from the rest of the game.  This process continues until there are two people left in the game.  At which point the players show their cards and the player with the best hand wins all the poker chips.

There are many different possibilities when it comes to the cards each player can be dealt.  Each player hopes they have the best hand of cards, however what does that mean?  To determine the best hand many hands have been outlined and ranked.  Here is a list of the most common hands; we have ranked them from worst to best.
